Meeting #557 - June 27, 2006

We had a wonderful meeting on June 27, 2006, for our final meeting of the current Toastmasters year. We had an inspiring theme in Three Ingredients That Make a Speech Outstanding.

We were ably led by Toastmaster Guy. Toastmaster Kathryn brought us a Word of the Day: calced, which means wearing shoes, or shod. Toastmaster Robert brought us a Quote of the Day. And Toastmaster Louise provided another quote, in lieu of a Joke of the Day.

Then we turned to our first speech for the day. First, we heard from Toastmaster John v. with the objectives for a Competent Toastmaster (CTM) Speech #7. Then, we heard Toastmaster Bill's seventh CTM speech. Next up was Toastmaster Angie with another Competent Leader (CL) speech, Evaluate to Motivate.

Next we heard from Toastmaster John v. with an evaluation of Toastmaster Bill's speech.

We then had time for a little club business. Incoming club president, Toastmaster Kathryn mentioned that the club executive is looking for an individual to take on the Club Secretary role. Toastmaster Guy mentioned that he has accepted to be Area 19 governor for 2006-2007. Dows Lake Toastmasters club wishes him all the best in this endeavour!

During the club business portion, meeting Toastmaster Guy also worked in some Table Topics, inviting three members of the incoming executive to share with the club their objectives for the coming year: Toastmaster Angie (new Vice President Education), Toastmaster John S. (new Vice President Membership), and Toastmaster Kathryn (new President).

Then we moved in to the evaluation portion of the meeting. Toastmaster John S. provided a General Evaluation of the meeting, assisted by Toastmaster Aldo as Timer.

Toastmaster Guy returned to review the agenda for next week and we adjourned.

Looking forward to seeing you for the start of the new Toastmaster year on July 4!

Meeting #556 - June 20, 2006

We had a great meeting on June 20, 2006, though our numbers were down a bit again. A sign of impending summer, perhaps? Our theme was Rollercoasters and we were visited by a returning guest.

We were ably led by Toastmaster Carrie. Toastmaster John S. brought us a Word of the Day: vacillate, which means to sway from one side to the other; to swing indecisively from one course of action or opinion to another; or to hesitate. Visitor John v. brought us a Quote of the Day. And Toastmaster Marcos then provided a Joke of the Day.

It was then time to move to our first speech for the day. We initially heard from Toastmaster Louise with the objectives for a Competent Toastmaster (CTM) Speech #2. Then, we heard Toastmaster Robert's second CTM speech, "Thankfulness". Next up was Toastmaster Angie with a Competent Leader (CL) speech, "Roles and Responsibilities".

Being slightly ahead of time, we had some time for club business. First we heard from Toastmaster Kathryn. The club is going to have a shorter break this summer. We will continue to meet weekly up to July 18; then we will have a break of three (3) weeks and restart our weekly meetings on August 15. Toastmaster Carrie also came forward with some club business regarding a get-together to celebrate the end of the Toastmaster Year 2005-2006. There will be additional information about this later, but the idea is to go to a restaurant for lunch early in July.

We then moved in to the evaluation portion of the meeting. We started with an Evaluation of Toastmaster Robert's speech from Toastmaster Louise. Then Toastmaster Kathryn provided a General Evaluation of the meeting, assisted by Toastmaster Bill as Timer and Toastmaster Sharon as Grammarian/Ah Counter.

Toastmaster Carrie returned to review the agenda for next week and we adjourned.

Looking forward to seeing you on June 27!

Meeting #555 - June 13, 2006

We had a great and quite popular meeting on June 13, 2006. Our theme was Numerology and we were visited by three guests. We were ably led by Toastmaster Rebecca. Toastmaster Sharon brought us a Word of the Day: numismatics, which is the science of coins and metals. Toastmaster Carrie brought us a Quote of the Day. Toastmaster Robert then provided an Invocation of the Day.

It was then time to move to our speech for the day. First, we heard from Toastmaster Kathryn with the objectives for a Competent Leader (CL) speech. Then, we got to think about our club climate with the speech on Moments of Truth from Toastmaster Gisèle.

We then had some time for Table Topics, brought to us by Toastmaster Louise, who provided some challenging ideas to think about for Toastmaster Marcos, Toastmaster Angie, and Toastmaster Kathryn.

We then had some club business from Toastmaster Kathryn. The club is trying to decide whether to take a complete break from meetings from July 11 to August 22, or to have a decreased schedule of meetings only every two weeks. The club executive committee would like to hear from the club members.

We then heard from Toastmaster Carrie, who brought us some Quizmaster questions to see how well we had all listened to the meeting.

We then moved in to the evaluation portion of the meeting with a General Evaluation of the meeting, from Toastmaster Guy, assisted by Toastmaster John v. as Timer and Toastmaster Bill as Grammarian/Ah Counter.

Toastmaster Rebecca returned to review the agenda for next week. We then adjourned.

Looking forward to seeing you on June 20!

Meeting #554 - June 6, 2006

We had a very different and special meeting on June 6, 2006. We were treated to a special guest speaker and we also had visits from a number of guests.

Our Toastmaster and chair for the meeting was Toastmaster Guy. Our special guest speaker was Toastmaster Betty Healey from the Glengarry Toastmasters Club, in Alexandria, Ontario. Betty treated us with her presentation on RoadSigns. It was an educational and very enjoyable session.

Following the presentation, we had a bit of club business. Toastmaster Kathryn presented Toastmaster Robert with a mug, in honour of his Icebreaker speech last week. Then Toastmaster Kathryn encouraged members to step forward to become the club secretary.

Toastmaster Guy reviewed the agenda for next week and we adjourned.

Looking forward to seeing you on June 13!
